Membership Conditions

Subject to the articles, there shall be one class of members in the Federation. Membership in the Federation shall be available only to individuals interested in furthering the Federation's purposes and who have applied for and been accepted into membership in the Federation by resolution of the board or in such other manner as may be determined by the board. Each member shall be entitled to receive notice of, attend and vote at all meetings of the members of the Federation.

Pursuant to subsection 197(1) (Fundamental Change) of the Act, a special resolution of the members is required to make any amendments to this section of the by-laws if those amendments affect membership rights and/or conditions described in paragraphs 197(1)(e), (h), (l) or (m).


Membership Transferability

Membership is opened to all persons including people of Sierra Leonean descent and other Canadians and organizations that support the aims and objectives of the Sierra Leonean Canadian Federation. A membership in the Federation is not transferable and automatically terminates if the Member resigns or such membership is otherwise terminated in accordance with the Act.


Pursuant to Section 197(1) (Fundamental Change) of the Act, a special resolution of the members is required to make any amendment to add, change or delete this section of the by-laws.


Membership Categories and Fees

a.   Adults: annual membership fee - $30 per person, and couple (partner/spouse) - $50;

b.   Seniors: annual membership fee - $20 per person;

c.   Kids and youths: free membership for kids and youths 0 to 25 years of age;

d.   Associate membership:
      i.  a member who supports (including financial and practical supports) the aims and objectives of the Federation;
      ii.  no fee;
      iii.  not eligible for benefits indicated in the by-laws, but may receive other supports that shall be determined by the board; and
      iv.  does not have the rights to nominate, run, vote, or hold office in the Federation.

e.   Affiliate organization membership
      i.   annual membership fee: $100
      ii.  shall receive both financial and practical supports


Discipline of Members

a.   A member shall face suspension or expulsion from the Federation for reasons of misconduct, illegal activities, embezzlement of the Federation's funds, or the pursuance of activities contrary to the objectives of the Federation;

b.   A member shall face suspension or expulsion from the Federation for reasons of harassment, intimidation, aggressive behavior, use of coarse language and battery or assault on a member or members during the Federation's meetings, events or other activities;

c.   Suspension of general members shall be approved by a two-thirds majority of the Peace and Conflict Resolution Committee; and

d.   Expulsion shall be approved by a unanimous vote of the committee members at a special Peace and Conflict Resolution Committee meeting.
